In their continued commitment to peace and the rule of law, LNP engaged its legal team to address the current and ongoing land encroachment and human rights violations.
The main defendants, Mohamed Tunde Marcarthy, a businessman/politician, Abubakarr Bah, a police officer, and Jeremiah Turay were served twice by the court but failed to appear on both occasions, with the next court sitting scheduled for November 3rd.
Regrettably, under the pretext of “constructing a residential facility for persons with disabilities”, the current Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs Melrose Kaminty and team, has used the police to disrupt peace in the community.
Despite numerous efforts by Prince T Williams, Executive Director of LNP, to engage stakeholders, police leadership and the Ministry of Social Welfare in dialogue since September 5th, no meaningful response was received.
Instead, the police provoked violence, firing tear gas into the community, looting building materials and computers and torturing staff and residents.
Allegedly, this action led to the tragic death of a 2-day-old infant who died of suffocation due to the effects of the tear gas and, following media intervention, subsequent statements have been presented to the CID.
The current position concerning the disputed land remains under court injunction, even though Mrs Kaminty and her team are continuing construction on the piece of land in question.
