In partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone, the Welbodi Partnership and King’s College London, Lifeline Nehemiah Projects continues to save lives by changing mindsets, raising awareness, and strengthening maternal and newborn healthcare through community engagement.
Working closely with community stakeholders, healthcare workers, traditional birth attendants (TBAs), religious leaders and local authorities, the projects promote increased antenatal care (ANC) attendance, early detection and management of hypertension during pregnancy, and the prevention of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.
Responding to requests from the various community stakeholders, the Lifeline team has also facilitated dialogue and reconciliation between health workers, TBAs and community members in several project communities – these efforts having strengthened collaboration, improved referral systems and increased trust within government health facilities.
As relationships between TBAs and healthcare workers continue to improve, more pregnant women are attending antenatal clinics, home deliveries are decreasing, pregnancy-related complications are being detected earlier and timely referrals are being made – these positive changes contributing to improved maternal and newborn health outcomes across the communities we serve.
